Phong Nha Travel Guide: Caves, Ducks, and Motorbike Adventures

If you’re making your way through Vietnam, do not skip Phong Nha. I almost did, and I’m so glad I didn’t. This little town is all about epic caves, wild duck stops, and jaw-dropping scenery—and it’s one of those places where everything feels a bit off-the-beaten-path in the best way.

Where I Stayed

I stayed at Central Backpackers Hostel, which was budget-friendly and super comfy. The beds were surprisingly good, and the whole place had a really social vibe. Every night they do an hour of free beer, which makes it super easy to meet other travelers. If you’re solo, this is the kind of place where you’ll instantly find a crew.

What to Do in Phong Nha

Paradise Cave

This is hands down one of the most incredible caves I’ve ever seen. It’s massive—photos just can’t capture the scale. You really have to see it in person to understand how insane it is.

Dark Cave

This one’s more adventurous: mud baths, kayaking, and zip-lining all rolled into one. It’s messy, weird, and a ton of fun. Go in expecting to get dirty and laugh a lot.

The Duck Stop

Yes, you read that right. Feeding ducks was one of the main reasons I came to Phong Nha. The Duck Stop is chaotic, hilarious, and kind of unforgettable. Definitely one of the weirdest experiences I’ve had on the road—but in the best way.

You can actually book a tour through the hostel that covers all three activities. It was about $50 for a full-day tour, and 100% worth it.

Exploring the National Park

One of my favorite parts of my time here was renting a motorbike with some friends and driving around the national park. The roads are smooth, the views are stunning, and it’s a great way to take in the landscape at your own pace. If you’ve got the time, I highly recommend doing this.

How Long to Stay

I originally booked 3 nights, but honestly, if you’re doing the tour, 1–2 nights is probably enough to see the highlights. There’s not much nightlife beyond hanging out at the hostel, so unless you’re planning to relax or explore deeper into the national park, you might end up heading out early like I did.
