The Ha Giang Loop: Vietnam’s Ultimate Motorbike Adventure

If you’re headed to Vietnam, you have to do the Ha Giang Loop. No questions asked. It’s hands-down one of the most scenic, adventurous, and unforgettable experiences in the country — and maybe even all of Southeast Asia.

I did the 4-day, 3-night tour through Ha Giang Hostel for $260 USD, and it was worth every penny. That price includes everything — all your meals (family-style and delicious), home stays each night, your motorbike and gear, and an experienced guide or driver if you need one.

4 Days vs 3 Days — Which Tour is Best?

If you’re tight on time, you can opt for the 3-day, 2-night loop instead, but just know: the last day of that tour is long. Like, hours and hours of riding. The 4-day version spreads things out more, giving you shorter rides each day with plenty of time to take in the views. Trust me — your butt will thank you.

The drivers are great about stopping at viewpoints to stretch, snap pics, and take breaks, so it never feels like too much.

Small Group > Party Tour

Another tip: go with a smaller group. There are “party” tours that pack in tons of people and get rowdy, but the smaller tours give you a much more authentic feel. You’ll still have fun — there’s karaoke and plenty of “happy water” (Vietnamese rice wine) at dinner — but you also get to enjoy peaceful mountain views, deeper convos with locals, and more traditional meals.

Driver or DIY?

I went with an easy rider (a local who drove the bike while I rode on the back), and I’d 100% recommend it unless you’re very confident on a motorbike. The roads can be rough, with some sharp turns and steep cliffs. Having a driver let me soak up the scenery without worrying about the terrain — and also kept me alive, which was a nice bonus.

The Home Stay Experience

The home stays are super basic — think: one big room with a bunch of beds. Not glamorous, but part of the charm. That said, if you’re craving a bit more comfort, most home stays offer private rooms you can book ahead of time. It’s a small upgrade, but worth it after a long day on the road.

What to Pack

You really don’t need much. Just bring:

  • 3 pairs of clothes
  • A swimsuit
  • Toothbrush
  • Toilet paper or wet wipes (a lot of places don’t have any)

As long as your bag fits on the back of the bike, you’re good to go.

Final Thoughts

The Ha Giang Loop isn’t just a ride — it’s a full-on adventure through some of Vietnam’s most jaw-dropping landscapes. Between the winding mountain roads, warm local hospitality, and nightly karaoke sessions with “happy water,” it’s an experience that sticks with you.

If it’s not already on your list, add it. And if it is — bump it to the top.
